The EPA states, “Nearly 1 in 15 homes in the United States is estimated to have an elevated radon level. You cannot predict radon levels based on state, local, and neighborhood radon measurements. Do not rely on radon test results taken in other homes in the neighborhood to estimate the radon level in your home. Homes which are next to each other can have different radon levels. Testing is the only way to find out what your home's radon level is.” Source: The US EPAThe US Surgeon General says, "Indoor radon gas is the second-leading cause of lung cancer in the United States and breathing it over prolonged periods can present a significant health risk to families all over the country. It's important to know that this threat is completely preventable. Radon can be detected with a simple test and fixed through well-established venting techniques." January 2005We can place a continuous radon monitor inside the home for 48 hours or more. The machine monitors for radon and detects motion, temperature, barometric pressure, and humidity levels. Therefore, a continuous radon monitor is the only effective method to detect attempts to defeat the test within an occupied home or one under construction. Passive radon test kits can be moved outdoors and you'd never know. What about radon in granite countertops? "At this time...[the] EPA does not believe sufficient data exist to conclude that the types of granite commonly used in countertops are significantly increasing indoor radon levels."
